March 2020:

Dear Parents and Guardians of Junior Infants,

The topics which we were teaching over February and March are as follows:

Maths - Time,  the number 0, combining and partitioning of sets.
Literacy - blending words and beginning reading. New phonic introduced each week.
Gaeilge -  Seachtain na Gaeilge, Jeaic agus an Gas Pónaire (Jack and the Beanstalk).
Learn Together - Value for February - Love.  Value for March - Honesty.
P.E. -  Outdoor and Adventure: fundamental movement skills: walking, running and balancing.

We were planning on starting on teaching about the farm. While we had not begun this, feel free to begin discussing and exploring this topic at home.

Other learning topics:
The Fancy Dress shop
The Shoe shop
The Farm
Irish Myths and legends
Planting and taking care of plants
Spring

As part of our homework, the children are beginning to read both picture books and short text books. It is important to remember that each child learns to read at their own pace, and reading should always be a positive experience.

As always, many thanks for your support and co-operation.

English

Objectives
Activities

Oral Language
  • Ask your child some questions that we cover in our circle time: e.g. Would you rather live underground or live in the sea? Beans or peas? What is your favourite animal?
  • Listen and draw tasks
  • Nursery rhymes
  • Listen to stories and retell in your own words

Reading
  • Begin sounding out blending CVC words (three letter words with vowel-consonant-vowel) using the spellings that we have already covered.
[Jolly phonics groups 1 - 5, also including ‘y’, ‘x’]
  • Read a picture book with no words and make up your own story.
  • Find tricky words in a story
  • Read to and with your child every day

Writing
  • Practise writing the sounds we know - use as many different colours as you can!
  • Practice making the letters in a bowl of rice or sand etc.
  • Free writing
  • Write a thank you card to Doctors, nurses and carers in our local hospital in Tallaght, for all the hard work they are doing.
  • Write and send a letter to an older person in Sally Park Nursing Home in Firhouse. Tell them about what you have been up to, the signs of Spring you have noticed and tell them something nice about yourself. You could also draw a picture of yourself in the letter.

Story - The Hungry Caterpillar
  • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75NQK-Sm1YY
  • Retell the story to a family member
  • Make your own version of the story with pictures
  • Make up your own ending - what else could happen?
  • Sequence the story - what did the hungry caterpillar eat on Monday? On Tuesday?
