2nd Class Teaching and Learning Notes update 18th-22nd May 2020

Hello 2nd class students, parents and guardians,

We hope that you are all keeping safe, well and happy at home.

As many of you will have seen in our assemblies, we are including students and staff who have a talent or insight they want to share. If there’s something your child would like to share, like reciting a poem or passage from a favourite book, something inspired by our wellbeing or active home activities, be sure to let us know through homelearning@firhouseetns.ie with the name of your child’s teacher in the subject line and we will endeavour to schedule it for a future assembly.

Thank you to everyone who took part in World Book Day. It was amazing to receive all of your pictures of the books you enjoy reading and seeing your costumes at the assembly. We love to see, and hear, that you’re getting the opportunity to read your own books at home.

This week, we have attached a document with some mindfulness/well-being activities for you to take part in. There is a choice of activities so do whichever ones suit you, or give them all a go!

We will be holding a zoom class meeting on Wednesday 20th May for all of 2nd class. It will begin at 12:30 and will last approximately 30 minutes. This will be a social meeting. We will have time for a chat and to hear how everyone is getting on. We will also invite some children to show some of the work they have been doing, e.g. their project on their favourite animal etc. Please let the class teacher know if your child would like to present their project or show other work so that we can prepare a running order of events. Finally, we will be explaining how Google Classroom works as we will be using this going forward. We hope to see you all there and look forward to hearing all about what you’ve been up to over the past few weeks!

Attached as a pdf is the work for the week ahead. Do your best with this work but we understand it might be difficult to do it all. The three most important things you can do are: do lots of reading every single day, practise your spellings every week and revise your tables regularly.

Remember you can share your work, or any other activity/active challenge/project you have completed, with your teacher using the email address homelearning@firhouseetns.ie or the class form:
Celine’s Class: http://www.firhouseetns.ie/second-class-celine-2019-2020.html
Sarah’s Class: http://www.firhouseetns.ie/second-class-sarah-2019-2020.html

Finally, your happiness and mental health is most important during this time so please find a level of home learning (if any) that suits your family. Please get in touch if you need any further advice or support.

Very best wishes to you and your families,
Celine and Sarah

2nd Class Teaching and Learning Notes update 11th-15th May 2020

Hello 2nd class students, parents and guardians,

We hope that you are all keeping safe, well and happy at home.

As many of you will have seen in our most recent assembly, we are including students and staff who have a talent or insight they want to share, take Emily’s (Sarah’s Class) musical performance for example. If there’s something your child would like to share, like reciting a poem or passage from a favourite book, something inspired from Active HOME challenge, be sure to let us know through homelearning@firhouseetns.ie with the name of your child’s teacher in the subject line and we will endeavour to schedule it for a future assembly.

This week we are celebrating World Book Day. We know how much 2nd class like to read so we would love to create a collage of all the different books 2nd class are reading at home. If you would like to share, please take a photo of your child holding their book or just the book itself and send it on to your child’s class teacher. For our students, have a think about a book that you enjoyed reading and the reasons why. Please write a book review using the template to share your thoughts. It might just inspire your classmates to read the same book!

Here is the work for the week ahead.

Finally, your happiness and mental health is most important during this time so please find a level of home learning (if any) that suits your family. Please get in touch if you need any further advice or support.

2nd Class Teaching and Learning Notes update 5th-8th May 2020

Hello 2nd class students, parents and guardians,

We hope that you are all keeping safe, well and happy at home. We got a lot of great work done last week and hope everyone enjoyed a safe and relaxing Bank Holiday Weekend.

This week we are having a Jersey Day on Friday, 8th May so if you would like to wear your favourite jersey for the whole school assembly that would be fantastic! If you do not have a jersey, you can wear the colour of your favourite team/county/country. We will also announce the winning class of our Active HOME Challenge. If you haven’t already, please forward your Challenge Chart or active pictures onto your child’s teacher as 2nd class competes to win an extra PE class from an outside coach! We hope to see as many people as possible join in with this and can’t wait to see how 2nd Class have performed. Well done to everyone for taking part!

Here is the work for the week ahead.

Finally, your happiness and mental health is most important during this time so please find a level of home learning (if any) that suits your family. Please get in touch if you need any further advice or support.

Very best wishes to you and your families,

2nd Class Teaching and Learning Notes update April 27th - May 1st 2020

Hello 2nd class,
We hope you are all keeping well. It was lovely to see your happy faces at Friday’s Mad Hatter’s Day assembly. We were sent pictures of your fantastic hat creations! A big well done to all who joined in.

This week is Active HOME Week and we aim to be as active as possible. We want everyone to engage in at least 1 hour of some kind of physical activity throughout the day and record it on the “Challenge Chart” you received on Friday (linked above). Check out the school website and the table below for some possible activities:
Monday: Musical Statues
Tuesday: Toilet Roll Keepy Uppies
Wednesday: Family Wheelbarrow/ Wooden Spoon Race
Thursday: Target Practice Challenge (Pick a spot on a path or a wall and see can you hit it. Too easy? How can you increase the challenge?)
Friday: Fitness Alphabet  (make the letters of the alphabet using only your body)
Saturday: Skipathon
Sunday: Ball skills challenge (Basketballs, footballs, small balls, large balls- what skills can you do with them?)
Remember: Healthy Body, Healthy Mind, Don’t Put Off Feeling Good!!!!

Here is the work for the week ahead. Do your best with this work but we understand it might be difficult to do it all. The three most important things you can do are: do lots of reading every single day, practise your spellings every week and revise your tables regularly.

Remember you can share your work, or any other activity/active challenge/project you are working on, with your teacher using the email address homelearning@firhouseetns.ie or the form on your class webpage:
Celine’s Class: http://www.firhouseetns.ie/second-class-celine-2019-2020.html
Sarah’s Class: http://www.firhouseetns.ie/second-class-sarah-2019-2020.html
If experiencing problems with the class forms: The class forms work better on a computer or laptop. When using a mobile phone they can come up incomplete and, without all areas ticked, it will not allow you to send the form.

In addition to RTÉ’s Home School Hub looking at Dublin Zoo this week, you can experience the thrill of a trip to the zoo from home on https://www.dublinzoo.ie/news/dublinzoofun/ It seems like a great resource and we hope everyone can make use of it.

Finally, your happiness and mental health is most important during this time so please find a level of home learning (if any) that suits your family. Please get in touch if you need any further advice or support.

Very best wishes to you and your families,
Celine and Sarah

2nd Class Teaching and Learning Notes update April 20th - April 24th 2020

Hello 2nd class and welcome to a unique Term 3 as we continue our learning at home!

We hope you are all keeping well and that you enjoyed a well-deserved break for the Spring Holidays.

We know it is very hard to be apart from your friends at this time. Maybe write a postcard or a letter to your friends to share your news and keep in touch. As we learned in Stay Safe, if you are feeling upset it is important to chat to a grown-up at home. A problem shared is a problem halved!

Here is the work for the week ahead. Do your best with this work but we understand it might be difficult to do it all. The three most important things you can do are: lots of reading every single day, practise your spellings throughout the week and revise your maths tables regularly.

We love receiving examples of your work and we will continue to share these on the class webpages. We are especially excited to see what hat creations you have made for Mad Hatter’s Day this Friday, May 24th! Remember you can share your weekly work with us using the form on your class webpage.
Celine’s Class: http://www.firhouseetns.ie/second-class-celine-2019-2020.html
Sarah’s Class: http://www.firhouseetns.ie/second-class-sarah-2019-2020.html

In addition, you could continue using the learning activity ideas and links we sent you already but please remember that these were sent to you as a support rather than as essential tasks to be done.

Some other optional daily activities that our 2nd class students might be interested in:
  • RTÉ2 Home School Hub - 11am each weekday or on RTÉ player. The three múinteoirí are great fun and you’ll learn lots from them! More information at https://www.rte.ie/learn/
  • P.E. with Joe - 9am everyday https://www.youtube.com/user/thebodycoach1/videos
  • Read aloud by author David Walliams - 11am everyday https://www.worldofdavidwalliams.com/
  • ArtZone free classes(Facebook)- 12pm every Tuesday and Friday www.facebook.com/artzone.ie
  • www.dabbledoomusic.com – parents can sign up for free for one month. It contains music content for kids including radio shows, singalongs and games linked to the school curriculum
  • Discover what the animals in Dublin Zoo are doing! www.dublinzoo.ie
  • BorrowBox App: Children can listen to audiobooks and read ebooks online using this app. You sign up at Libraries Ireland and you'll be able to log in to the BorrowBox app and you can download children’s books that you normally would borrow from the library.
  • Your child has an account on https://www.studyladder.com/ and can do three activities each day for free. If you are unsure of the log in details, you can let us know using the form on the class webpage.
  • Your child is familiar with using www.spellingsforme.ie to practice spellings. Log in details are in their homework journal.

Very best wishes to you and your families,
Celine and Sarah

Hi everyone,

I hope you are all excited to begin this great challenge of learning at home. In the above document you will find a list of learning activities that can be done from home but these are intended as support to parents rather than an extra task that must be done.

This teaching note is a guide to support your child’s learning at this time. We also sent home a studyladder note and password with your child last Thursday so they will all have their own unique login and may work away on activities at their age level on that website.

Of utmost importance is the mental health and wellbeing of you and your family. We recommend taking time to figure out what works for your family.

Best wishes,
Sarah
