Fifth Class - Home Learning

Home Learning Monday June 22nd- Tuesday June 30th

Good morning everyone,

I hope you and your families are doing well at this time. I can’t believe this is our last full week of 5th class. Thank you all for your great work not only during these past few weeks but from all the way back in September! You should all be so proud of yourselves and I’m so proud to be your teacher.

I will be holding a class zoom meeting for everyone in Fifth Class on Friday at 10am. During this zoom we will talk about our favourite memories of Fifth Class, work we did during home learning, our hopes for Sixth Class and I have a very important announcement to make about the Junior Entrepreneur Programme! I really hope you are able to join me on Friday at 10am and I  would love it if you brought along something you made during home learning that you are proud of or even if you wanted to talk about something you did. I will send out the details for the zoom meeting later in the week.

As the summer holidays are getting closer and we are all unwinding for the summer holidays this week we are focusing on sports and active activities. As part of this we will be holding a Virtual Sports day on Friday. I am really looking forward to this. This week will also be our last week of book club. We are reading chapters 20-22. I’m really excited to see how the book is going to end and I can’t wait to discuss it with you all on Thursday!

Take care,
Edel

Home Learning: Monday June 15th - Friday June 19th

Good morning everyone,
I hope you and your families are doing well at this time. You have all been working so hard at home, well done you ! We have just over two weeks left before our summer holidays so try to continue the good work you are doing for these last few weeks.

As part of your work this week I have asked you to write about your favourite memories from 5th class. I’m really looking forward to reading these and I’m hoping to upload all of your favourite memories to the class webpage so we can all read each others favourite memories. Please submit this work on Google Classroom or you can send it to me using the home learning email address.

As the summer holidays are getting closer, we only have a few assemblies left in this school year so if there’s something you would like to share at our assembly, like singing a song, playing music, reciting a poem or showing us some other talent you have,be sure to let me know through homelearning@firhouseetns.ie with my name in the subject line and we will try our best to schedule you in.

Take care,
Edel

Home Learning Work 15/06/20
Below is the home learning work for this week. As always try to do as many tasks as you can but since we are celebrating nature and wildlife at the moment it is also important to spend as much time outside exploring nature and just having fun outdoors !

English:
  • Learn your  English spellings - Week 32 (see below).
  • Read Chapters 15,16,17,18 and 19 (14 pages) of ‘Danny, Champion of the World’ by Roald Dahl
  • Write about your favourite memories in 5th class. I will compile these  together and I will publish a copy of everyone’s favourite memories on our class webpage!
Maths:
  • Go on a bird hunt around your home and fill in the bird survey attached of all the different birds you can see in your neighbourhood  (You will find the bird survey instructions below). Please upload a picture of your bird hunt to Google Classroom or send it to me via email.
 Gaeilge :
  •  Watch the Bua na Cainte videos uploaded to Google Classroom.

Spellings: Week 32

  2. Geology
  3. Ecology
  4. Zoology
  5. Technology
  6. Terminology
  7. Ideology
  8. Mythology
  9. Chronology
  10. Meteorology
  11. Archeology

INSTRUCTIONS FOR BIRD HUNT:
  1. Begin by putting out some food for the birds, such as peanuts and sunflower seeds. Make sure you put the food near a tree or shrubs and some place where you can view it safely and quietly. Of course you can also observe the comings and goings of the birds that you notice around your neighbourhood.
  2. Observe for a certain time, e.g. 20 minutes, at different times of the day (morning, lunchtime, evening) and repeat your observation at the same time the following day or days.
  3. Using the template below count the number of birds that come into your garden, even if they do not feed on the food you put out for them. To help you identify the common garden birds have a look at the guides provided by the National Parks and Wildlife Service and available on www.livingearth.ie
  4. Now this is where your maths comes in: present your results in a bar chart. A bar chart is a chart that uses rectangle blocks to represent numbers.
  5. Put the names of the bird species on the horizontal axis (robin, crow, blackbird etc.).
  6. On the vertical axis mark the frequency, so if you saw 5 blackbirds then you will colour in 5 blocks high.

Good morning everyone,

I hope you and your families are all doing well at this time. I’m so happy with how hard you all are working with your home learning.

Another week and another excellent assembly. Last Friday we heard some excellent book reviews and saw some wonderful books. A big well done to Sarah Belle, Colum, Amelie, Robin and Joan for sharing the books they were reading with us.Congratulations to Sarah Belle for winning a book voucher for her interesting book review at Friday’s assembly. If there’s something you would like to share at our assembly, like reciting a poem or passage from a favourite book,be sure to let me know through homelearning@firhouseetns.ie with my name in the subject line and we will endeavour to schedule it for a future assembly.

This week we are focusing on  wellbeing! This means we are going to make a special effort to take care of our body and mind. We have suggested some activities you could do each day included on the document attached below.

The Irish work this week will be from Léigh sa Bhaile as per usual. However for this week I have uploaded two short videos to Google Classroom from the Bua na Cainte programme on the topic of “Caitheamh aimsire” (hobbies). Watching these videos is optional, it’s purpose is to allow the children to listen to Irish again particularly in a fun enjoyable way. This video may have to be downloaded to watch it on your device but as I have said this is only an optional activity and as always you can pick and choose what best suits you and your family.

Take care,
Edel

I hope that you all enjoyed the long weekend and are well rested for the week ahead.
Thank you to everyone who sent in their Active Home Challenge activity charts last week. If you haven’t sent yours in yet please email it to homlearning@firhouseetns.ie today! Good morning, boys and girls!

I hope you and your families are all keeping well at this time. I really enjoyed seeing you at the school assembly online last Friday and I would like to especially thank Isabelle and Rossa for performing at it. Over the last few days some of you have sent in photos of your hats for Madhatters and I am so proud of the work you have all put into these, they look absolutely incredible. I really enjoyed the process of making my hat and I hope you all did too!

Below you will find the work for the week, try your best to do this work but I understand it might be difficult to do it all and that is ok. The three most important things you can do are: do lots of reading every single day, practise your spellings every week and revise your tables regularly.

Just a reminder that your parents/guardians can send in one or two pieces of your best work each week to homelearning@firhouseetns.ie for your work to be added to our class webpage. Please include my name in the subject of the email so I can see it. I really enjoy looking at all the wonderful work you send in and I can’t wait to see this weeks work. Well done with all the work being completed on Google Classroom. Everyone is  working so hard and I am delighted to see this.

Finally, the Active Schools Committee (John, Bláithín and Clíona) have organised Active Home Challenges for this week. Details of the Active Home Challenge have been sent out in a previous email. I can’t wait to make a special effort to get active this week and I am particularly looking forward to trying the toilet roll keepy uppies on Tuesday. I have included some of the challenges suggested by the Active Schools Committee below and don’t forget to fill in the Challenge Chart to record all your activities. Remember that the class who clocks up the most active hours by the end of the week, will earn a special reward of an extra fun P.E. lesson from an external coach, once we return to school. I really hope this will be Fifth Class!

Take care,
Edel

Home Learning Monday 20th, April 2020

Good morning, girls and boys!

I hope you all enjoyed a much deserved Spring Break and that you and all your family are doing well during this challenging time. I am so happy with all of the great work you have been doing at home before the spring break and well done to all your families for helping you.

Below is some work for this week  to start the new school term.Just like the last two weeks, do your best with this work but I understand it might be difficult to do it all.

I was sent wonderful pictures in the past few weeks and I’m already looking forward to this week's pictures.

Finally, our Mad Hatters Parade will take place online on Friday so it’s time to start creating a hat if you have not started already. I can’t wait to see them all.

Take care,
Edel

Home Learning 18th March

Hi everyone,

I hope you are all excited to begin this great challenge of learning at home.

Below are lists of learning activities that can be done from home but these are intended as supports to parents rather than an extra task that must be done.

Also below are log-in details for your son/daughter to access Google Classroom, where tasks and assignments will be set. Please be assured these learning activities are intended to be a support for parents at this time rather than an extra task they must complete with their children. We do not want to add an extra challenge by assigning work to be completed. The school's expectation is that this work is provided to support your child during school closure.
