Science
Energy and Forces: Float or Sink? (Junior Infants - Bláithín)
Science Week - Senior Infants
Living Things: Plants and food dye
Materials: Dancing Hearts
Materials: Storm in a Cup
We did lots of experiments for Science week in our class.
Here we put skittles of different colours in a circle around a plate and poured warm water on top. A rainbow gradually started to appear. It was so much fun to watch!
This experiment is called 'Storm in a cup'. Here we put water in a jar and on top put some shaving foam. We mixed some water and blue food colouring into a bowl and then poured it bit by bit on top of the shaving foam. The shaving foam acted as the clouds and when the clouds could not hold any more rain, the storm happened.
We were so lucky to have Cormac's Mum come in and do a fun experiment using flowers and food colouring in our class. She placed the flowers in the food colouring mixed with water and we left the flowers on the window ledge for a few days and watched as the petals changed to the same colour as the food colouring. The stem had soaked up the coloured water and changed the white petals to a different colour. Science is so much fun!!!!!

Science Week - Junior Infants
Environmental awareness and care:
5th Class does a survey on single-use plastics in lunchboxes
This year, 5th Class attended the ESB Science Blast at the RDS on March 2nd, 2020. In preparation they designed and conducted a scientific investigation. They were interested in our use of single-use plastics in school lunchboxes. For one week, they did a daily survey of all pupils in 3rd, 4th and 5th Class. They then graphed and analysed their results. It was a very informative project which caused the whole school community to consider how we used single-use plastics.
Space Week: Infants visits the Exploration Dome
We went to the Exploration Dome. We went inside the dome and experienced the solar system! We could see stars, planets, moons and so much more. We learned about the weather on different planets and all about the constellations.
Living Things: Junior Infants (Holly) are growing daffodils
Materials: 5th class explore the Fire Triangle
Materials: 5th class explore the effect of acid (vinegar) on an egg
Environmental awareness and care:
4th class explore how to filter muddy water
Materials: 4th class mix Oobleck!
Energy and Forces: 3rd class build helicopters!
Science Week in 3rd Class
For Science Week, 3rd Class looked at our Carbon Footprint and the effect we have on the planet. We ended the week by making and experimenting with paper helicopters and gliders made using paper card and a straw. |
