Audrey and Lucy from Dogs Trust came to teach us about how to care for a dog. We learned that a dog is for life and not just a present. We also learned about Dogs Trust and the great work they do there. We absolutely loved Lucy and would love her to visit again soon.

Homework Choice
We have really enjoyed homework choice this year. We wrote recipes for our teacher. Gabriel did a pizza demonstration and told us how to make a pizza step by step. Lots of us made powerpoint presentations and taught us all lots of interesting information. One of the children made a robot that actually moves!
" I made it with cardboard and elastic bands and a motor. I got the motor off a boat. It works with a peg and when you push peg, the robot moves."

Tag Rugby- Kieran visited our class and taught us how to play tag rugby. It was a great experience.

We have been learning about Kenya. We read "Masai and I" and learned about the animals in the Kenya. Mohsin brought us in a weapon from Kenya. We learning lots of new facts and some of us even made our own powerpoints on Kenya. We hope you like our zebras.

Lullymore Heritage and Discovery Park

On Monday, the 19th of June, we went on our school tour to Lullymore Heritage and Discovery Park. Stephen gave us tour and told us lots of interesting facts. We learned about what a house was like during the famine and compared the house to our own. We had to find the hidden room in the house. We also visited a crannóg and the bog. We got the chance to ride on the train and we sang all the songs that we know. We then went to visit the pet farm, the playground and played mini golf. We thoroughly enjoyed the day. 

Mohsin's Day
My favourite part was the play centre. Everything is so different in the house. I loved the zipline. It was an amazing trip. We went to a farm. The farm's called Lullymore. We spent a long time on the bus and then we went on a train. 

Conall's Day
We went to Lullymore Farm. I liked the trian  and the Funky Forest. We went to a forest and a pet farm. We also had our break in a cafe.We saw a goat in the pet farm and a baby goat  which is called a kid. We made wishes and kept them a secret. We sang songs on the train. We played mini golf.

SEO LINN had a concert in our school!!

Seo Linn came to visit us on the 21st of June. We were so excited as we love watching their videos at break while we are eating. The concert was in the Community Centre and this was most of our very first concert. We made posters in preparation. We danced our hearts out during the concert and sang to all the songs we knew. Nadia even got the chance to do Amhrán na gCupán with Seo Linn and we were so proud of her. It was an amazing day and we loved all the instruments and loved that they sang so many songs in Irish. 

IMAGINOSITY

​We went to the ‘Squishy Circuits’ workshop. We were introduced to the concepts of energy and forces, including magnetism and electricity. We learned all about the different types of Engineering before assisting with two interactive movement demonstrations, and then we created our own circuits using play dough and a battery pack to light up our very own LED light! We then had a chance to explore Imaginosity and we had the best day ever, presenting the news, dressing up, working in a restaurant, driving race cars, reading x-rays etc. We had our picnic outside after and even got the chance to see baby ducklings. It was definitely one of the highlights so far. 

Rediscovery Centre came to our classroom to teach us all about recycling and waste. They played fun games with us and we made predictions and then learned the results. It was a brilliant workshop and then we made pictures using waste materials. We created our own unique pictures and they turned out pretty exceptional. Thank you for a great workshop!

Marilyn made a lovely Easter tree! We all love it in 1st Class.

We enjoyed a Spring Scavenger Hunt with second class which was organised by Conor and Rachael. Thank you very much, it was a great way to finish up before our holidays. 

STATIC ELECTRICITY
We have been learning about the two main kinds of electricity: STATIC and CURRENT. We  made static electricity by rubbing balloons on our hair. We also picked up rice krispies with a charged balloon. We recorded and compared the results and we had a lot of fun. 

Engineers Week-We designed roller coasters, a zip line and a bridge!

We worked with 2nd Class and designed bridges, zip lines and roller coasters. We brainstormed how we were going to complete the challenge. We worked together and finally completed the challenge. Each group had their own challenges but they all figured them out and did their best. It was amazing to see the results. Both classes really enjoyed the activities.

We visited the site during Engineers Week. We are delighted to see how fast our building is going up. 

Engineers Week 7-10th of March
We are learning about engineers this week and what an engineer does. We took part in a challenge today and built towers with spaghetti and marshmallows. We explored how structures are built and investigated what methods could make the tallest and strongest structures. At the end of the activity we came up with names for the towers. We also discussed the difficulties, challenges and how we could improve our towers.

World Book Day- 2nd of March
We dressed up as characters from our favourite story books. Conor's mum, Sonya visited our class and read "Green Eggs and Ham". We went over to Junior Infants and 4 children from first class read, "TJ and his Wheelable Chair" to Rachael's Junior Infant Class. James gave the school this book as a present and we learned that although TJ cannot talk or walk, he still loves to play like all of us. We then read a book to a child in both Junior Infant Classrooms. There was also a character parade and we marched around the yard guessing who all the other children were dressed up as. It was an enjoyable day and shared who our favourite characters are. 


Mina Swims The Liffey-Monday 27th of February
Garbo Productions brought the show "Mina Swims the Liffey" to the Community Centre. We learned about anti-littering. In preparation for the show, we each made a fish out of recycled materials. We made our fish out of milk cartons, toilet rolls, egg cartons and recycled classroom materials. We enjoyed the show and the different characters in the story such as the Pearly Mermaid and Spike the Salmon. We enjoyed when our fish joined in also. 

Healthy Eating Week
We learned all about healthy living. We really enjoyed this week and the different colours of fruits and vegetables in our lunch box. On Friday, we had a fantastic day and loved every minute of it. We spent the day in the school and joined up with 2nd Class. We began our day by creating our perfect healthy smoothie. We put fruit and vegetables into it and we tried at least one new fruit or vegetable in our smoothie. We then learned about the food pyramids and the different food groups. We made posters in groups. Following this, we had active foodie games in the yard. We finished the day with guessing and measuring how much sugar in yogurt, cola, drinks, chocolate and the story of where sugar comes from. We each got a piece of fruit or vegetable to take home. We had the best day ever! :) 

Chinese New Year-The Year of the Rooster
We learned lots of interesting information about the Chinese New Year. Children get red envelopes with money inside. The colour red is lucky to Chinese people as it symbolises fortune. Lion and dragon dances is performed by acrobats under the lion and dragon costumes. 2017 is the year of the rooster. We made Chinese dragon puppets and we had a school assembly about the Chinese New Year. We all sang "Gung Hay Fat Choy – Chinese New Year Song". 

December 2016
We had a busy month preparing for our "Hello to all the Children of the World" show. We celebrated diversity in our school and dressed in our traditional clothing or in traditional clothes from other countries. We began by singing "Eid Mubarak" and then we spoke about the Muslim faith. We learned many interesting things. We finished our performance with "We All Sing in the Same Voice".  We joined the rest of the school and sang "Hello to All the Children of the World". 

Cows, milk and butter

We have been learning about cows and the many things they give us. We had great discussions about milk and cows discussing how milk actually gets into cartons that we buy in the shop. In groups, we made a cartoon strip of the story or journey of milk. We also made butter in class. We loved making the butter and tasting it. 

Science Week
​

We have been learning lots of interesting facts this week. We have been learning all about our teeth and animals teeth.We have also been learning about foods and drinks that are good and bad for teeth. We did an experiment about sugar. We discussed our favourite drinks and estimated how much sugar is in each drink. We them read the ingredients and measured the amount of sugar and compared with our estimates. We were absolutely shocked to see how much sugar is in Coke, Ribena, chocolate milk and orange. We learned that one teaspoon of sugar equals 4 grams of sugar. We drew pictures showing our results. We all learned the most healthy drink with no sugar is water. 

We planted seeds

Sharon came in and taught us about Ogham. We learned about the Ogham alphabet. We each made a bookmark and wrote the first letter of our name in Ogham. We painted and decorated our pots in our groups prior to Sharon's visit. We really enjoyed planting with Sharon and learning about the local leaves in Firhouse. We can't wait to see our seeds growing.

​Con O' Callaghan from the Dublin team came to visit on Monday. He brought the Sam Maguire Cup with him. We asked lots of questions about the cup and we couldn't believe how heavy it was. We wore blue clothes to celebrate the boys in blue. Edwina designed her own t-shirt and even surprised us all by writing a card to Con. He was thrilled to meet everyone and took his card away with him. 

Sami's last day
​We enjoyed our last day with Sami today. We wish him the best of luck moving back to Poland. We will miss our lovely, caring friend.

Self Expression Day- 28th of October
We loved dressing up and expressing ourselves. We went for a walk in the field next to our school and we had a disco. We raised money for Amnesty and Educate Together. We each received a bracelet. We had a great day. :) 

Our Wise Owls- We all drew owls using oil pastels and charcoal. We loved blending the colours with our fingers. 

Wednesday, 26th of October- We had an action day. We got our hi vis jackets, litter pickers and rubbish bags. In groups of three, we worked as a team and picked up rubbish around Firhouse Community Centre. We couldn't believe the amount of rubbish that people throw away. We filled 7 large bags of rubbish.  We love the our school slogan, " Don't be a quitter and pick up your litter. "

Someone Like Me- We have been learning about disabilities and all our own great abilities. We believe it's okay to have a disability. We have also been learning about our similarities and our differences. We are happy and proud that we are all different and unique. We all have different interests and special talents. We designed individual posters and a class poster. We wrote words in the clouds that make us feel welcome and more included. 
Wednesday- 19th of October- Maths week
We had a great morning measuring, telling the time and designing new playgrounds for our new school as part of Maths Week. Thank you to all the parents who came in and helped us in class. We really enjoyed it!
Myself- by 1st Class
We learned that we are all unique and shared information with our friends about things we like and also our special talents. We drew pictures of ourselves, outlining our picture with oil pastel or charcoal. We also added some glitter/wool or sequences at the end to make our picture really stand out.

Maths Week in First Class- Tuesday the 18th of October. We had great fun in class today doing different maths activities with parents. Thank you so much for coming in to help us. We are looking forward to playing our new Snakes and Ladders game at home.
