Settling in to Second Class... |

We have really enjoyed settling into second class this year. It is nice to be back in school with our friends again.
Design a shoe competition
We designed our own shoe using a variety of different materials and fabric. We really enjoyed cutting up the fabric and deciding what way we would like to put it on.
Our projects on the counties of Ireland
We are creating our own projects in groups of two or three on the counties of Ireland. Each group takes one county and researches its history, sport, transport, tourist attractions and finds out where it is located in Ireland. We have been working really hard both in school and at home to find out all about our county so we can present it to the class when it is finished. The counties being looked at are Kilkenny, Waterford, Dublin, Wexford, Galway, Mayo, Kildare, Donegal and Cork. We are going to create a power point to go with our scrapbook project too so we can present it to everyone with confidence. We cannot wait!!!
It's a small world
We love music in our classroom. This is a video of us performing a song we have been learning over the last few weeks called 'It's a small world'. We love this song because it is about all of the children of the world coming together as one. We hope you enjoy watching us perform :)
Maths Week
This week is Maths week and in school we did Maths stations with some of the parents on Tuesday and Wednesday the 18th and 19th of October. We had lots of fun and would like to say a huge thanks to Mia's Mum, Isabelle's Mum, Sarah Belle's Dad, Joseph and Jacob's Mum and Rossa's Dad for coming in to help us with our stations. We had lots of fun!
Rounding up and down - this station involved picking a number card and deciding whether it had to be rounded up or down to the nearest ten. They had to stand on the x circle and throw the beanbag to the correct ten.
Greater than/less than or equal to - at this station one person picked a red card and then a green card containing a number. They then decided whether the red card was less than, greater than or equal to the green card by placing the correct crocodile mouth or equals sign in between the two cards.
Shapes - the children looked at the picture of the tiled floor. They picked up red cards that asked them questions about the image they were looking at (what shapes do you see?, can you fit a circle into this image? etc) and at the end they were given a sheet with lots of squares. Using rulers and colours, they created their own mosaic tiled image.
Time - we used our circle carpet as a clock face. We placed numbers around the clock face and had a metre stick for the big hand and an ordinary ruler for the small hand. We rolled two dice and added the numbers up for the hour hand. We picked a green card which said quarter past, quarter to, half past or o'clock. We created the time and wrote the digital time on the board to match.
Clifford the big red dog
We were very lucky today and got a visit from Clifford the big red dog. He signed lots of autographs for people in the class and gave high fives and hugs to everyone. It was a fun part of our day!
Forest School
Rachel (Rossa's Mum) came in to visit us on Tuesday 25th of October to help us create our very own bug hotel in our yard. We used sticks that we bunched together and tied with string. We placed these inside pallets that were on top of each other in the yard. We are hoping to see lots of different bugs take shelter for the winter months inside our bug hotel.
Green School Action Day
We had our Green School Action Day on Wednesday 26th of October. We wore green clothes to school that day and did lots of lessons based on recycling and caring for our environment. We read the story of the Lorax by Dr. Seuss where the onceler was being greedy and tore down the forest of truffula trees to make thneeds that he really didn't need. It made us realise how important trees are for the environment. At the end of the day, we went litter picking with the help of some parents and relatives of children in our class. It was such a success and we collected lots of rubbish from around our school grounds. We were so happy to make our school a greener and cleaner place.
Self Expression Day
We really enjoyed self expression day on Friday 28th of October, the last day before we got our midterm holidays. We could dress up as something that expressed our personality or as someone we admired. We traced our handprint with chalk on the yard and placed any coins we had inside which were collected for Amnesty and Educate Together. we raised over 300 euros. We went on a costume walk and had a disco on the yard at the end of the day. It was a great end to a brilliant first half term. Happy holidays everyone :)
Sam Maguire cup came to visit
We were very lucky because on Monday the 14th of November the Sam Maguire cup was brought into our school to celebrate the Dublin team winning the All Ireland Final against Mayo this year. We got to meet the Dublin GAA player Con O'Callaghan and hold the cup for ourselves. It was really heavy.
Planting trees
We learned all about the Irish tree alphabet and how the first letter of our name looks. We made book marks using leaves and writing the first letter of our name in the tree alphabet on the card.
We decorated plant pots in our group and with the help of Sharon planted our very own trees using hazelnut seeds. We cannot wait to see them grow.

Science Week
Science week ran from the 14th of November until the 18th of November in our school. We did lots of fun experiments such as placing a celery stick into food colouring and watching it turn a different colour. We also made our very own volcano by mixing vinegar and baking soda. We looked at how eggs float in water when salt is added and we mixed oil and water with some food colouring to investigate how oil does not mix with water and when adding food colouring it turns into a lava lamp. Clodagh in our class also brought in an experiment to investigate what is needed to power a digital clock. We used apples and found when we connected the wires in the correct way, the clock powered on. We became scientists for the week and had lots of fun experimenting!

Hello To All The Children Of The World show
Second Class put on a brilliant performance on the 22nd of December in the community centre in front of all the parents for our 'Hello to all the children of the world' show. We performed Rockin Robin using instruments and spoke about the Jewish festival of light called Hannukah. We ended our performance by singing 'It's a small world'. We then joined with the rest of the school to perform the title song 'Hello to all the children of the world'. It was a great day.
Chinese New Year
Chinese New Year fell on the 28th of January in 2017 and this year was the year of the rooster. Second class made lanterns out of red card and decorated them with felt, using pipe cleaners as handles. We learned all about how the festival is celebrated around the world and how the old year is swept out to bring in the good luck of the new year. We coloured our own Chinese dragons. It was a lot of fun!
10 @ 10
On Friday 27th of January every primary school in Ireland was asked to partake in 10 @ 10 which was 10 minutes of physical activity at 10am. We all went out to the yard and Conor, the Junior Infant teacher led the activity with stretches and jumping jacks and in between this we were dancing around the yard to music. It was great to have lots of exercise before our break time!
World Book Day
World Book Day took place on Thursday 2nd of March. We all dressed up as characters from our favourite stories. We had regular D.E.A.R times throughout the day (Drop Everything And Read), we did buddy reading with senior infants and read our class novel Matilda with our class buddies. We also redesigned the cover of our favourite stories. It was great fun being book worms for the day. We ended the day with a character parade around our yard. We love books in second class and to celebrate the day we all got a book token to put towards buying a book of our choice!
Active Week
Active week was a great success and ran from Monday 24th of April until Friday 28th April. The children did lots of activities such as soccer in the community centre with a coach from Shamrock Rovers, Volleyball with mini spikers, laser tag, Tug of War Tuesday with the classes going against each other as well as second class vs the teachers, soccer in the Astropark in Tallaght and Firhouse Fittest friends in the field where different stations were set up including tug of war, egg and spoon race, long distance running and target throwing using beanbags. It was great fun and second class really enjoyed it!
Making Sunglasses
Second Class were scientists for the day and made sunglasses for all this sunny weather we are having. They learned all about the sun and how it gives us heat and light. They used laminating sheets for the glass and coloured it in with marker and they cut out their glasses frame using white card. It was a fun activity!
Australian Projects
Second class presented their Australian projects at the end of May. They worked really hard with each group taking a different aspect of Australian life. One group looked at Aboriginal Art and people, another group looked at famous landmarks of Australia, another group looked at the Great Barrier Reef, another group looked at the big cities of Australia, another group looked at the different animals of Australia and the last group looked at Australian sports. They presented their projects in scrapbooks to the class with lots of pictures and information. Rossa's Mum was a great help bringing in items for us to look at such as an Aboriginal scarf and a boomerang. It was great team work!
Our School Tour to Lullymore
Second class went on their school trip with first class to Lullymore Heritage Park in Kildare. Although it was a long journey to get there, they had so much fun. They learned all about Irish history and visited a cottage from the time of the Famine. They also went on a train that brought them around the park. They learned about fairies and saw the little fairy village there. They made a wish at the fairy tree but have kept what they wished for a secret so it will come true! They had fun playing mini golf and in the playground too. The sun was shining and it was a great day!!
Dogs Trust Visit
We had a visit from Dogs Trust on the 20th of June and the lady brought her King Charles dog Lucy with her. We learned all about what it takes to look after a dog and the work that the volunteers and staff at Dogs Trust do to look after and rehome the dogs in their care. The most important lesson we remember from that day was that 'a dog is for life not just for Christmas!'.
Sports Day
The weather finally allowed us to have our sports day on Thursday 29th of June and we all went out to the field to participate in the stations where we had hurling, football, GAA, penalties, obstacle course, parachute, chasing games and beanbag throw. In the afternoon we went out to have races and some parents came to watch. It was such a fun day. Our teacher Jen was on the beanbag throw station in the morning so here are some pictures from that station and if you'd like to see more photographs from the day, please look at the main page for updates. It was a wonderful end to a great year! :)
