First Class - Home Learning

1st Class Teaching and Learning Notes 22nd - 30th June

Hi Everyone!

Welcome to your last seven days of 1st Class! It has been a very unusual school year, and you have all managed so well. We are very proud of all the wonderful learning you have done at school and at home, and we would like to thank each and every one of you, children, parents and guardians, for your enthusiasm, cooperation and kindness.

For our last few days of 1st Class, we are focusing on getting active and the virtual sports day planned for the assembly on Friday 26th June at 12.15p.m. We are also encouraging you to try some of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) activities you may not have had a chance to attempt last week. In addition, we are suggesting you try some of the work set out for you on Studyladder, if you have access to a device.

Our final Zoom Story Time for the two 1st Classes will take place on Wednesday 24th June at 12.30p.m.
Please join us! We would love to see as many of you there as possible! We will send Zoom meeting details in advance. As usual, we will read a story and have a short discussion about it. We will then ask the children to share some examples of a favourite memory or piece of learning from 1st Class.

As always, we welcome you to share examples of your child’s learning via  homelearning@firhouseetns.ie or the class webpages.
Claire’s Class: http://www.firhouseetns.ie/first-class-claire-2019-2020.html#
Suzanne’s Class: http://www.firhouseetns.ie/first-class-suzanne-2019-2020.html

Well done on completing 1st Class! You have come so far on your learning journey, and we wish you the very best in 2nd Class.
Very best wishes to you and your families,

Claire and Suzanne

1st Class Learning Activities 22nd - 30th June 2020

Core Subjects (English, Gaeilge, Maths)
  • English and Maths on Studyladder: log on to your child’s profile on Studyladder and help them to try some of the literacy and numeracy activities we have set for them.
  • English:
    • Spellings: learn and write sentences or a story using these words: not, sum, next, turn, nurse, turkey purple, love, cover, hamburger

  • Gaeilge:
    • TG4, the Irish language broadcaster, has a lovely set of stories being read aloud in Irish. Some of these stories will be familiar to your child in English. It’s a lovely way for them to listen to and enjoy the Irish language. Cúla 4 (children’s version of TG4) hosts a YouTube channel which includes these stories - search for ‘Scéal an Lae’ (story of the day) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCusPSXmu_J8eKbEz0duYVfQ/search?query=sc%C3%A9al+an+lae

Getting Active:
  • Please join us on Friday 26th June for our virtual sports day assembly at 12.15p.m.
  • Try to do at least 30 minutes’ physical activity every day and try different games/activities - e.g. running, football, skipping, jumping, hopping.
  • Make up your own game, obstacle course or circuit of different physical activities.
  • Try some of these exercises and activities from the Scoil Net website. They focus on the following skills: throwing, catching, balancing, landing, running, skipping, dodging, kicking, jumping, striking with a hand/implement. https://www.scoilnet.ie/pdst/physlit/beyond/
  • Take lots of time to play actively, indoors and outdoors. This government initiative ‘Let Children Play’, suggests lots of activities to support children’s physical, mental, social and emotional health and well-being https://www.gov.ie/en/campaigns/lets-play-ireland/

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) Challenge
  • Last week, we shared some suggestions for you to explore Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. Have another look at these ideas at http://www.firhouseetns.ie/step-5-stem-showcase.html and https://pdst.ie/STEM-Webinars and choose something you have not attempted already, or try a task again, thinking about what changes you would like to make to your work.
For example:
  • Create a puppet - create a working puppet and somewhere for them to perform.
  • Create a maze - use resources from your home or try coding a maze game on a device.
  • Create the best toy ever!
  • Create a rubbish monster or robot using recycled materials.
  • Make a Rube Goldberg machine - a machine which when started, creates a chain reaction.
  • Design and make a raft that can travel on water and carry some weight.

  • Help your child to complete the worksheets below, also available at: https://my.cjfallon.ie/preview/student/10167/110 and https://my.cjfallon.ie/preview/student/10167/111
  • Encourage your child to design and carry out their own data collection in the local environment. For example, they could sit outside for five minutes and count how many birds and trees they can see, or how many cars and bicycles pass by. They could then represent this information by drawing pictures or colouring in boxes to represent how many of each object they have seen, set out in columns or rows, as in the worksheets below.

Maths
Counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.
  • This week we are going to practice counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.
  • This can be done using any concrete materials, such as lego, blocks, lollipop sticks etc.
  • Part of the challenge is to practice counting on from larger numbers, example count in 5s starting from 20: 20, 25, 30, 35 etc.
  • Below are some sheets to help you.
  • Remember too that cooking, shopping, playing with money, telling the time, baking, playing lego, online computer coding games, creating timetables, playing board games and looking at patterns in nature all help your child’s maths. This is a great opportunity for children to see real life maths in their own world so feel free to be as creative as you can!!

  1. Reading
Do some reading every day and talk about what you have read with another member of your household.

  1. Spellings
Practise your spellings every day: recite and write your spellings. Use the words in sentences or stories.

  • jet, dig, help, boy, toy, enjoy, annoy, two, four, destroy

  1. Writing (Persuasive Writing)
Persuasive writing is used to try to convince someone of a particular point of view. Younger children can explore this genre of writing by discussing and writing about their personal preferences. This can be fun for children, as they get a chance to argue their point of view!

Try some of these examples - ask your child to answer the question and write or tell you three reasons for their answer, to convince you to agree with them:
  1. Which make the best pets, cats or dogs? Why?
  2. Which is more fun, playing in the park or playing at the beach? Why?
  3. Which is more delicious, pizza or burgers? Why?
  4. What time should you be allowed to go to bed at? Why?

There are some tips and ideas for persuasive writing at: https://pdst.ie/node/586

General Writing Tips for First Class
When writing your sentences or stories, please focus on:
  • Using capital letters at the beginning of sentences and for people’s names, place names, titles, months, days of the week (but not on other words)
  • Using capital ‘I’ when referring to yourself
  • Making sure you spell each word carefully
  • Using finger spacing between each word
  • Using a full stop at the end of each sentence
  • Using question marks at the end of a questioning sentence

Maths

Place Value (Tens and Units)

Try these worksheets, all about Place Value (Tens and Units). The main learning points for your child are:
  1. A ‘unit’ is a single object (or picture of a single object) such as a block or lollipop stick
  2. These units (objects / pictures of objects) can be grouped into collections of ten
  3. One ‘ten’ is made up of ten ‘units’
  4. When a number has two digits, the digit on the left tells you how many ‘tens’ there are, and the digit on the right tells you how many ‘units’ there are e.g.
34 = 3 tens and 4 units

1st Class Teaching and Learning Notes 27th April - 1st May

Hi everyone!

We hope you enjoyed our Mad Hatter Assembly last Friday, and we were very impressed with everyone’s fantastic work last week.

This week’s core learning activities are explained below. We encourage you to do your best to complete these and share them with us using the form on your class webpage. We love receiving examples of your child’s work!
Your child can write out the answers to worksheets rather than you having to print the worksheets, whichever is most convenient for you. You can then either email us at homelearning@firhouseetns.ie or upload your child's work using the form on the webpage. Please note that this works best on a laptop as opposed to a phone or other device.
Claire’s Class: http://www.firhouseetns.ie/first-class-claire-2019-2020.html#
Suzanne’s Class: http://www.firhouseetns.ie/first-class-suzanne-2019-2020.html

We have also provided some suggestions below of additional learning activities, which you can use if you wish. Remember, the Active Home Challenge is taking place from Monday 27th April to Sunday 3rd May. Please join in and help our school to earn its Active Flag!

The RTÉ2 Home School Hub continues to air each weekday morning from 11am to 12pm. Their website is https://www.rte.ie/learn/ and the show is also available on RTÉ Player.

Very best wishes to you and your families,

  • We invite you to create a Mad Hatter’s hat and upload a photo of it to your class webpage for Monday 20th April.
  • Active resources, including some arranged by the South Dublin County Sports Partnership and ICT resources can be found on our school website in the relevant sections. South Dublin County Sports Partnership have provided coaches for us during the year and are now offering live guided activities over YouTube for us to join in with Monday to Thursday and are looking for suggestions for a Friday activity.
  • Finally, RTÉ2 is starting a programme called Home School Hub each morning from 11am to 12pm, starting today (Monday, March 30th). You may find some more nice learning ideas here. Their website is https://www.rte.ie/learn/ and the show will also be on the RTÉ player.

Very best wishes to you and your families,
Claire and Suzanne
