For this challenge you are encouraged to walk, jog or run to visit the landmark sights of Ireland.
1km = 1 lap You can complete laps when in Zone 2 or 3 of a playground at break times with a lap of the perimeter of the Zone equaling a kilometer!

Check out the map of the different landmarks to get to around Ireland. Lets see how many we can get to before the end of our first term!
HAVE FUN ON YOUR TRAVELS AROUND IRELAND!
Active Breaks: We commit to take part in at least one active break each day. This can take the form of a running, dancing or exercise break.

A Huge Well Done to our Active HOME Challenge week champions in Junior Infants! There was a huge effort put in throughout the school and at the end, it was very close. We can't wait to all be back and give Junior Infants the opportunity to claim the prize their hard work earned!

Well done to all of you who took part in
Active HOME Week!

We were over the moon, seeing so many of you making a big effort to put in at least 60 minutes of exercise every day, for one whole week. So many of you sent in your Challenge Charts and many of you sent in pictures of you being active at home!

Remember: There is a super prize up for grabs for the class who were active for the most hours combined during this
challenge week.
One of the classes in the school is in with the chance to win the prize of a special (and extra fun) p.e. class from an external coach!

We have been blown away by how well you have all done.
You should all be proud of yourselves, and we are proud of you all!

On the main page of this website, there is a dance class video put together by one of our own Junior Infant parents. In the video, there are 4 dances that you can try at home.
How about you record yourself doing the dance and send it in via
the [email protected] email.

It would be brilliant to see you all practicing your dance moves at home and staying active.

On a side note...
Just because Active HOME Week is over,
it doesn't mean being active for 60 minutes each day should stop.
We need to all keep moving for more than 1 hour every day!
Keep up the good work everyone :)

Don't forget about the really cool prize that's up for grabs, if you class can be active for the most amount of hours! You don't want to miss out! Come on lets beat the teachers and the ISAs!
Collette has been going on a lot of early morning walks and she came across these beautiful deer roaming around! They're taking part in Active Home Week too!
Celine took part in a Sports Day in her home this week!
Holly attempted the 'Throw the Egg Challenge'... it didn't go to plan as we might have thought...

Firhouse ETNS Active Parents

One way to be active is to follow the Alex Si Kids Channel which is hosted by a member of our own Firhouse ETNS community, First Class parent Alexandra Silinia. You can tune in to a live 30 minute P.E. class every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 11 AM for 5-11 year olds.

See if you can join in with our Junior Infant parent Shauna as she leads us through some exercises through dance. If you do feel inspired, record it and send it to us at
[email protected] with "Active School in the subject bar!

FMS at Home

Picture
We have done lots of work on our Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) this year and now you have the opportunity to continue this in your home. Check out the Beyond The Classroom page from the PDST for videos on how to develop your skills in the home!

Staying Active at Home
Children engaging in physical activity everyday is something everyone in Firhouse ETNS fully supports. In the current environment of home learning, we at Firhouse ETNS want to support our school community in meeting this commitment with some suggestions that might be of benefit to you and your children.
1. Many of you might have seen the recent news segment about the training video of the young Irish goalkeeper that was watched all over the world. See what balls you have in the home and try to create a training drill and set a new target each day! Could be throwing the ball in the air and seeing how many times you can clap your hands. It could be how long can you dribble a ball with one hand or around obstacles before losing control. What can you create?
You can also check out the FAI skills videos:
FAI Homeskills.
If soccer is your thing, check out Coerver Coaching! They offer a technical programme for youth footballers used all over the world. The programme was inspired by the former Dutch coach Wiel Coerver and they are offering free access to their Homestudy curriculum.

2. Twinkl is another useful resource in terms of physical activity. They are currently offering free access to their bank of resources: www.twinkl.ie/offer (Enter the code IRLTWINKLHELPS)
When you have logged in, search for different physical activities and enjoy your explorations.
Twinkl have also created a new eSports section. Be sure to check it out here.

3. Another way to encourage physical activity is to be inspired by others. Check out these resources and see if you can be inspired to have an Active Lifestyle:
She Can! The Colouring Book for Tomorrow's Sports Stars
GAA Heroes Colouring Book
No Barriers at Home (Initiative inspired by the Euro Football Championships by footballers who have overcome barriers)
FAI Colouring Sheets:
#WeWillDraw

4. Guided videos are another way to engage in physical activity. Joe Wick's Youtube channel uploads an active PE lesson every morning at 9am every morning. Access the videos here.
You can also create an account at GoNoodle and explore their collection of videos. You could also engage in activities trí Gaeilge: 10 @ 10

 5. Yoga is another fun activity that everyone can get involved in. Patricia Hunt from Butterfly Yoga has sent in a link for yoga classes for the whole school community: https://butterflyyogaandpilates.com/your-practice-tips-and-sequences/ More details about Butterfly Yoga can be found on the After School Class section of our website.
You can also enjoy yoga through story: https://www.kidsyogastories.com/yoga-storytime-videos/
We have uploaded some yoga resources for everyone to explore and we hope you enjoy doing so. If you really enjoy yourself, take a picture in one of the included poses or one of your own and send it to us at [email protected]
with "Active Schools" in the subject line so that we can share it with the school community. Remember: Healthy body, healthy mind, don't put off feeling good!

 Active Flag

The Active Flag is a Department of Education and Skills initiative that recognises schools that “strive to achieve a physically educated and physically active school community”. See website www.activeschoolflag.ie for details. Our pupils, staff and parents are committed to making activity and exercise a fun and everyday way of life in our school. Firhouse ETNS's most valuable resource, it's students, will have a big part to play as we move forward with this process.

Physical Education programme
Each class participates in a minimum of one hour timetabled physical Education per week. Pupils take part in lessons that cover the strands of the Physical Education Curriculum - Athletics, Dance, Games, Gymnastics and Outdoor and Adventure activities. Senior classes now take part in the aquatics strand also. These lessons take place in the hall and in the playground and school grounds.

Physical Activity Initiatives
In addition to PE lessons pupils take part in many fun activities to stay active. Our school day is regularly revitalized within the classroom with ‘brain break’ activities such as yoga, dance, aerobics and Zumba thanks to the Go Noodle website, the Bizzy Breaks programme, 10@10 breaks and teacher led physical movement breaks. These regular brain breaks boost energy levels fuelling the children’s brains for further learning. These breaks are particularly important on rainy days when we can’t get outside and movement breaks are extended on these days.
We have many initiatives to promote activity throughout the day and school year. These include the K a day, skill of the month, zoned playground games, the 10@10,school discos and will be introducing an "Active Walkway" to the school yard.
Teachers also use activity throughout the curriculum. For example maths trails, nature walks, tours of the school, Deir O Gradaigh as Gaeilge.

Partnerships
We have good partnerships with local sports clubs, who come in during the year to give taster sessions, including St. Anne's GAA club, Tallaght Rugby Club through Leinster Rugby and Cricket Leinster. We aim to expose our students to as many different and varied sporting experiences as we can so will continue to develop these partnerships as we move forward.

Fundamental Movement Skills:
In Firhouse ETNS, we are incorporating the Fundamental Movement Skills into our P.E. teaching to help develop the physically literate child. These include loco-motor, stability and manipulative skills.

January Strand: Athletics
F.M.S. Focus: Jumping for Distance & Landing
February Strand: Games
F.M.S. Focus: Striking with the Hand, Striking with an Implement

Active Yard Time

Our Active School Committee has been working especially hard recently as they have lead Yard Time activities. First, they created Winter themed exercises and are now helping the children of Firhouse ETNS with their Fundamental Movement Skill of Landing. This is especially great as it helps the school reach their target of improving the teaching and learning of Gymnastics for the year.

Active Walkway
Our Active School Community did a great job decorating our walkway to the school yard with active prompts! An active child is a happier and better achieving child so we hope our school gets great use of our Active Walkway!!!
Active Breaks: For the months of November and December, all classes have been taking part in Active Breaks and the Run Around Europe Challenge. Our Active Committee have been recording laps made by each class and after four weeks, Firhouse ETNS have covered the distance to get to Tallinn in Estonia, Skopje in Macedonia or Moscow in Russia. Lets keep it up!
Sports Club Survey
A big thank you goes out to our Fifth Class who spent time visiting each class to find out the different clubs that the students of Firhouse ETNS take part in. It has been very interesting to see the varied pursuits our students are engaged in outside the classroom to stay active.

Firhouse ETNS, an Active School

Here at Firhouse Educate Together National School we recognise the important role exercise plays in staying healthy and happy! We aim to give the children as many opportunities as possible to get active whilst at school, whether it be P.E. lessons, Move It mornings in the yard or our movement/brain breaks in the classroom.

"When life throws you a rainy day, play in the puddles."

European School Sports Day 2019: For the day, every class committed to 2 hours of physical activity and even though it was a wet day and we were stuck inside for most of it, we all reached our targets!

Junior Infants 'Active Homework'

Active Week 2017

We had a such a great week for Active Week 2017! This week we learned all about the importance of staying active. Each day each of us made a commitment to do AT LEAST 60 minutes of exercise each day. We started off each morning with one of our world famous 'Move It' mornings, each morning a different teacher led us in exercise and on Friday girls from Second Class led us in dance to 'The Macerena'.
We had very special visitors to help us celebrate active week too! First and Second class enjoyed a visit from Jessie from Volleyball Ireland and they also went to the Astro Park in Tallaght. We also had Ben and Jessica from Pentathlon Ireland for the Laser Run, we LOVED this! For the laser run we ran and used laser guns to shoot at a target! Some children even commented that it was "the best thing they had ever done!" On Friday, we all took part in our very own version of RTÉ's popular T.V. show "Ireland's Fittest Family" which, we named "Firhouse's Fittest Friends". We took part in several events such as; Tug of War, Bean Bag Toss, Egg & Spoon Race, Activity Relay, The Mammoth Marathon Race and The Frisbee Throw! To top off a fantastic week we were all awarded a beautiful certificate to reward all of our hard work!

Healthy Eating Week at Firhouse Educate Together

What a fantastic week we've had in F.E.T.N.S!! During Healthy Eating Week we learned all about food. Each day we tried a different kind of fruit and/or vegetable. On Friday we had a healthy eating day where we did lots of activities to do with healthy eating. We made our own food pyramids,  carried out a science experiment where we looked at the amount of sugar in different foods, an active station where we did some exercise (which we learned is very important as well as a healthy diet) and we made DELICIOUS fruit and vegetable smoothies. Another great week in Firhouse Educate Together!

'Move It' Mornings

Come and have a look at our 'Move It' mornings, where children and parents come together and start the day off with some exercise in the yard before school.

Crazy Costume Mile

We ran, walked, skipped and jumped for a mile in our costumes whilst celebrating our 'One Day Together' and we raised money for charity too.

Our School Disco

We bopped til we dropped at our school disco! Children and staff from all classes came together and spent the afternoon dancing to music in the yard.
