Hello Everyone,

Car Park: I'm very pleased to let you know the car park on the Killinniney Road was opened by SDCC last Monday around 10am. The car park will be padlocked open by SDCC who are also looking into adding a height restriction bar at the entrance/exit. Please note the car park has a one-way system in place with the entrance being the gate nearer to our school.

There is much happening in our school as you will see from notes below and indeed these are only the tip of the iceberg!

Forest School: All classes are enjoying moving the bark chippings from the car park to the garden area of the yard and last week’s sunshine was an added bonus. Many thanks to the following parents: Rachel for organising the delivery of bark chipping from SDCC and lending us wheelbarrows, spades etc., and to Sylvia and Marcellin who helped with moving it. Potatoes have been planted in the sacks at the edge of our bark laden Forest School area.

Green School: All classes are getting into the routine of weighing Paper, Compost and Other bins on a daily basis. The composter is in use now too and children are emptying classroom compost bins into it. We are also asking children to take home empty plastic cartons (e.g. yoghurt containers / water bottles etc.) for washing and recycling at home as we cannot do the washing in school and we'd appreciate your help with this.

Parents’ Association (PGTA): our school’s first ever Family Fun Day Fundraiser will be held in the school on Saturday 28th May and everyone is needed to help out. You can help at a stall, paint faces, cook a main course or a dessert, make tea, wash-up, bring along your unwanted bric-a-brac, books, bed linen…… the list is endless! Please contact the PGTA committee or the school to volunteer.

Active Schools Week - Active Schools Week took place this past week. We had many fun activities each morning and thank you to those of you who got involved by joining in the morning activities in the school yard. HOPSCOTCH on Wednesday was a favourite. On Thursday the rain meant Zuu Chimps was an indoor event and on Friday we had some Disco Dancing. We also had instantaneous jogging sessions for the whole school in the yard when a class rang the bell on the corridor at random times during the day.

Nut Allergies – thanks for your continued support.  Reminder: we are a nut free school.

Calendar 2016-2017 – Our calendar has been updated for the next school year 2016-2017 – please see policies page. Next school closures are May 2nd to 4th. Our school is open on May 5th and May 6th,

New Junior Infants Visit: On Friday May 6th at 13.30pm the children who will commence Junior Infants in September will visit the school for a play date while their parents attend an introductory meeting in Room 4. I’m looking for a couple of parents from our current Junior Infants’ class to volunteer to chat with new parents on the day. Let me know if you can help with this.

Media– RTE Education Correspondent Emma O’Kelly, interviewed some parents at the school gate on Wednesday 22nd April about the lack of places available for September.  This story may be broadcast in the coming week but there is no set date.

Census – Last Sunday was census night. Census data influences provision for education and equality in the area.

EDUCATE TOGETHER SECOND LEVEL:  RETNS Secondary Schools Information Evening: Rathfarnham Educate Together National School Parents Association Committee is organising a Secondary Schools Information Evening for interested parents and guardians on Thursday evening 12th May 2016 between 7.30pm and 9.30pm in Rathfarnham ETNS school hall.

They have invited parents and guardians from Firhouse Educate Together National School to attend and find out more about Second Level options for their children.

They have also invited a selection of secondary schools that RETNS pupils have attended over the last 10 years who will provide parents and guardians with relevant information and will be available to answer questions on the evening.

Please contact Sharon Wilson, Chairperson, RETNS Parents Association Committee if you need anymore information.

Very best regards,
Collette
